Giyani man killed in robbery crossfire

Police are hunting suspects after a customer was fatally shot during an armed robbery at a shop in Xikukwani village.

LIMPOPO – Police in Giyani have launched an urgent manhunt for a group of unknown suspects involved in a violent robbery at a local shop in Xikukwani village on Thursday morning. Tragically, a customer caught in the crossfire lost his life after being shot during the incident.

According to reports, the robbery unfolded at approximately 08:00 when four suspects, three men and one woman, entered a local shop under the guise of ordinary customers, intending to make purchases. Armed with firearms, the group patiently waited for the right moment to strike.

Once inside, the suspects swiftly turned on unsuspecting patrons. They robbed the customers of the cash and cellphones that they had on hand before moving to the shop’s teller, where they forcefully took all the money from the till.

Among those targeted was 54-year-old Jimmy Hlungwani, a customer who, unfortunately, became the victim of more than just theft. Besides cash and a cellphone, he was carrying car keys, which were also seized by the assailants. During the chaos, Hlungwani was shot in the upper body as the suspects fled the scene.

Emergency services quickly arrived and transported him to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the following day. This violent incident sent shockwaves through the Xikukwani community, raising concerns about safety and the rising threat of armed robberies in the area.

The SAPS Giyani has urged anyone with information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the suspects to come forward.
