Tzaneen EST urges precaution as fire season begins
The EST strongly advises against lighting campfires, bonfires, or even barbecues, particularly in areas experiencing dry and windy weather.
TZANEEN – As the annual fire season starts, the Tzaneen Emergency Support Team (EST) is urging residents, landowners, and community members to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to prevent wildfires.
Outdoor burning remains one of the biggest risks during fire season.
The EST strongly advises against lighting campfires, bonfires, or even barbecues, particularly in areas experiencing dry and windy weather.
Under these conditions, even a small spark can quickly ignite surrounding vegetation and escalate into a dangerous wildfire.
“People often underestimate how quickly a fire can spread during this time of year,” said Marinus van der Westhuizen of the Tzaneen EST.
“Avoiding unnecessary burning is one of the most effective ways to prevent disaster.”
Residents are also reminded to use extreme caution when operating equipment such as lawnmowers or vehicles in grassy areas. Hot engine parts or stray sparks can easily ignite dry grass.
Smokers are urged to ensure that cigarette butts are completely extinguished before disposal, as smouldering embers can ignite dry leaves and debris.
The EST recommends that all landowners follow the guidelines set by the local Fire Protection Association (LFPA) and monitor the Fire Danger Index (FDI), which is shared twice daily on the LFPA WhatsApp group. The FDI provides up-to-date information on fire risk levels based on weather conditions and other factors.
In addition, residents are reminded never to leave any fire unattended and to report any signs of smoke immediately.
Early intervention is key to preventing small incidents from becoming large-scale emergencies.
