Tzaneen set for major growth along R71 corridor
Food Lover’s set to open in September as Tzaneen’s R71 corridor transforms with major healthcare, retail, and lifestyle developments.
TZANEEN – Food Lover’s Market will officially open the doors of its brand-new store along the R71 on September 18, ushering in a fresh wave of development in Tzaneen.
The relocation from the Lifestyle Centre to the purpose-built premises signals not only a retail upgrade but also the start of a series of major projects reshaping the town.
The move is highly anticipated by shoppers. The new outlet promises more floor space, better parking, and expanded product ranges. Resident Michael Mohale said the relocation would solve long-standing access issues.
“Food Lover’s is one of our favourite stores, but the Lifestyle Centre could be very congested. The new site will make shopping a lot more convenient,” he said.

But the Food Lover’s development is only one piece of the broader transformation taking place along the busy R71 corridor.
Several large-scale projects are either underway or planned, strengthening Tzaneen’s position as a regional hub.
One of the most ambitious is the expansion of Mediclinic Tzaneen.
The multi-year project will upgrade the whole facility significantly with more and bigger emergency rooms, and most rooms will be expanded in size significantly.
According to Zane Fanie, CEO of Mediclinic Tzaneen, the phased construction is designed to minimise disruption while improving the hospital’s ability to serve patients from across the district.

Healthcare services are also being boosted by the recently launched Tzaneen Healthcare Hub, located just behind McDonald’s off the R71. The centre offers consulting suites, X-ray services, a pharmacy and laboratory facilities, making it a one-stop medical destination.
Meanwhile, the Sasol garage on the R71 is set for a major renovation next year.
The upgrade will expand its facilities and retail space, catering to motorists and travellers heading to and from the Kruger National Park.
Adding to the town’s growth is a new mixed-use development near Spur, which will include a filling station, convenience store, two restaurants and a pharmacy. For residents, this means more choice and easier access to essential services without having to travel outside town.

Residents, too, are optimistic. Nthabiseng Ramalobela, a young professional, believes the town is striking a balance between growth and community spirit. “It is exciting to see Tzaneen modernising, but it still feels like home. Soon, we will not need to travel to Polokwane for everything,” she said.
With Food Lover’s Market leading the way on September 18, and major healthcare and retail projects following close behind, Tzaneen is embracing a new chapter of growth.
The town is rapidly transforming into a vibrant hub of healthcare, commerce and lifestyle, all anchored along the R71 corridor.
