4×4 adventurers conquer Wolkberg mountains in 3 day trek

Eight 4×4 vehicles crossed rivers, rugged valleys, and the Wolkberg switchbacks in a three-day Tzaneen adventure ending at Serala offices.

LIMPOPO – Eight vehicles departed from the Oppieoewer campsite in Tzaneen on Friday morning, August 22, for a three-day 4×4 adventure through the rugged Wolkberg mountains, ending at the Serala offices close to the Iron Crown towers on Sunday afternoon.

The convoy’s first day took them into the Lekgalameetse reserve, where they camped overnight just inside its borders.

The Lekgalameetse Park is a conserved mountain wilderness of 18 718 hectares in the northern Drakensberg of Limpopo. The reserve entrance is 5km by dirt road from Ofcolaco on the R36. Indigenous forest and mixed woodland occupy the valleys, while the mountain crests are covered in grassland.

On Saturday, the group continued toward the Olifants River, stopping in the riverbed for lunch before following the river to Mafefe. From there, the route turned north to the village of Mampo and into the Mohlapitsi Valley, where participants again camped beside the river. Sunday’s journey was the most thrilling, with the group crossing the river 23 times before tackling the famous Wolkberg switchbacks.

The adventure wrapped up at the Serala offices around 14:00, where participants dispersed and headed home.

Organiser Gerrit du Toit of Tzaneen described the three-day trek as a great success, offering challenging trails and breathtaking scenery.
