‘Healthy’ lead for Frans du Toit teacher

Teacher Phindile Mathebula shone at Lulekani Wellness Day, winning multiple trophies while promoting fitness and mental well-being.

PHALABORWA – A sports enthusiast and Frans du Toit High School teacher, Phindile Mathebula, showcased her athletic skills at the Lulekani Wellness Day on Wednesday, August 27, walking away with multiple certificates and trophies for her outstanding performances.

The event, held at Frans du Toit High School and hosted by the circuit for educators, featured a variety of sporting and wellness activities aimed at encouraging teachers to stay active and healthy.

Mathebula secured first place in the 100m sprint and the relay race, took second place in the musical choir competition, and was named Woman of the Match in netball.

“I am generally a very sporty person. I am always excited and passionate about it. I want to keep fit, active, and healthy. So, when I heard about the event, I thought, ‘Sign me up!’ I am always motivated and ready for any sporting activities,” she shared.

“Representing my school was a great feeling and a real confidence booster. It was an absolute pleasure. Other educators came out strong and competitive, making sure to represent their schools well. I am just glad I could fly the Fransies flag high with pride,” she said.

She added that she is actively involved in netball and holds a South African Schools Netball (SASN) grading as an umpire, which enables her to participate throughout the netball season.

“I am a firm believer in the saying ‘active body, active mind’.

As educators, we need to keep our minds sharp, and sports help with cognitive function, improving memory, concentration, and attention span. Being active also reduces stress and depression and boosts our mood, which is vital for our mental health and for performing our best in shaping the young minds entrusted to us,” she concluded.
