Ward 10’s Masipala hunt first final since 2017 dominance ended
Once Greater Giyani's dominant soccer force, the Ward 10 side have rediscovered the attacking confidence that fuelled their golden years.
LIMPOPO – Ward 10’s soccer team, popularly known as Masipala, will face Ward 18 in the semi-finals of the Greater Giyani Mayor’s Cup at Giyani Stadium on August 22, with the former champions hoping to continue their impressive run and reclaim the trophy.
Masipala have emerged as one of the favourites for this year’s competition after producing some of the tournament’s most convincing performances in the opening rounds.
A history of dominance
The Ward 10 side is no stranger to the latter stages of the Mayor’s Cup.
Before 2017, Masipala were among the dominant forces in the competition, regularly lifting the trophy and establishing themselves as one of Greater Giyani’s football powerhouses.
For several years, they were regarded as one of the teams to beat until their dominance was eventually ended by a new generation of teams.
A campaign built on renewed confidence
Since then, Masipala has struggled to reproduce the level of success they enjoyed during their golden years.
Their fortunes appeared to take another blow last year when they were eliminated in the early stages by a team that eventually went on to win the tournament.
However, this year’s campaign has offered Ward 10 supporters renewed hope that Masipala may be on the verge of returning to its former glory. Their impressive performances in the current competition have demonstrated a renewed attacking confidence and determination, suggesting that the team is once again ready to challenge any team for the Mayor’s Cup crown.
Their convincing victory in the previous round secured their place in the semi-finals and sent a strong message to the remaining teams that Masipala should not be underestimated.
Eyes on the final
The clash against Ward 18 now presents another major test for Ward 10 as they seek to book their place in the final.
With their sights firmly set on the trophy, Masipala will need to maintain the attacking flair, discipline, and confidence that have characterised their campaign so far.
For their supporters, the semi-final represents more than just another match. It is an opportunity for a team with a proud history in the competition to prove that its best days may not yet be behind it.
