Tzaneen vies for Limpopo greenest town title
GTM impressed inspectors during the Limpopo Greenest Town Competition assessment, showcasing its drive for sustainability.
LIMPOPO – The Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) has successfully concluded a two-day assessment for the Limpopo Greenest Town Municipality Competition, an initiative that celebrates excellence in environmental management and sustainable service delivery.
Inspectors from the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet), together with officials from Mopani District Municipality, evaluated GTM’s efforts in areas such as waste management, urban greening, and environmentally friendly service delivery.
Over the two days, the assessment team visited several key sites that demonstrated GTM’s integrated approach to environmental sustainability. These included the Tzaneen Taxi Rank, industrial areas, GTM’s nursery, and drop-off centres in Nkowankowa and Haenertsburg.
A highlight of the programme took the inspectors to the Tzaneen landfill site, where top-performing recycling workers were recognised for their contributions.
With sponsorship from Protonka Recycling, cash prizes were awarded to three workers: R3 000 for first place, R1 000 for second, and R500 for third.
“Your dedication is not going unnoticed,” said GTM’s Cllr Maria Mmola. “The future of a cleaner, greener Tzaneen depends on the efforts we make today.”
The visiting team concluded the assessment with encouraging feedback, commending GTM for its visible commitment to sustainable development. The results of the greenest town competition are expected to be announced later this year.
