Nkowankowa man due in court for girlfriend’s murder

A 33-year-old man will appear in Ritavi court after his girlfriend was found dead in Nkowankowa following a suspected GBV incident.

TZANEEN – A 33-year-old man is expected to appear before the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court today (Tuesday, September 23) in connection with the murder of his 24-year-old girlfriend at Nkowankowa Location, Section C.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that the incident took place last Friday morning following a heated argument between the couple.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect strangled the young woman to death. Two days later, he attempted to take his own life. Community members who became aware of the attempt alerted his family, who immediately contacted the police,” says Mashaba.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the victim’s body tied up on the bed. The suspect was arrested shortly afterwards.

Acting Provincial police commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers, has strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of gender-based violence.

Police investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, with domestic violence not being ruled out as a motive.
