Sleep among wildlife at Mopani’s Shipandani Hide

Experience the wild up close with an overnight stay at Shipandani Hide near Mopani Rest Camp – a unique bush adventure under African skies.

HOEDSPRUIT – Nestled on the edge of a river just outside Mopani Rest Camp, Shipandani Hide has been a favourite destination for wildlife enthusiasts since it was established in 2001.

Known as one of the best vantage points to spot aquatic animals and other wildlife as they drink or pass along the river, the hide offers an intimate glimpse into the raw beauty of the bush.

For those seeking more than a quick daytime stop, Shipandani can also be booked for an overnight stay, turning an ordinary visit into a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Unlike other facilities in the park, however, an overnight stay at the hide follows a shorter schedule.

Guests check in 30 minutes before the camp gates close and must leave half an hour after the gates have reopened to the public. This 12-hour window is shorter than the standard 20-hour cycle elsewhere in the park, where visitors usually arrive in the afternoon and leave the following morning. The early departure ensures that day visitors can enjoy uninterrupted access to the hide from sunrise.

While the hide feels safe during the day, spending the night inside can be daunting for those unaccustomed to the wilderness. Its timber-lined walls allow guests to see animals roaming freely outside, creating a thrilling sense of closeness that may unsettle first-time visitors.

Without solid barriers or electronic fencing, it is natural to wonder about predators climbing inside the hide, especially leopards and cheetahs. Yet, according to Pieter du Plessis, assistant manager at Mopani Rest Camp, these fears are largely unfounded.

“In the 24 years since the hide opened, we have never had an incident where a leopard climbed in or attacked a visitor,” he explained. “The hide is generally safe. We’ve hosted both local and international guests here, and none have ever been harmed by wild animals.”

Despite its rustic setting, Shipandani Hide does not compromise on comfort.

Linen is provided for overnight guests, and bookings are managed through Mopani Rest Camp. The hide is equipped with six beds, which during the day are cleverly disguised as display boards. At night, they unfold to become sleeping quarters, and are folded back into place each morning before guests depart.

Ideal for nature lovers eager to experience the bush in its rawest form, Shipandani Hide offers more than just animal sightings. It offers a chance to sleep surrounded by the natural sounds of the wild. The hide is not for everyone, but for true nature lovers it is a rare opportunity to experience the bush in its most authentic form.

Nights here are filled with the calls of nocturnal animals, the ripples of the river, and the vast stillness of the African sky. For visitors to Mopani Rest Camp, an overnight stay at Shipandani Hide is more than accommodation. It is an unforgettable memory of Africa at its most untamed.
