Charles Mathonsi celebrates 5 years of excellence

Charles Mathonsi Secondary celebrates five years of academic success, with matric pass rates soaring from 33% to 95%.

LIMPOPO – Charles Mathonsi Secondary School is celebrating its fifth consecutive year of remarkable academic achievement after many years of underperformance.

The school’s turnaround began in 2021, shortly after the arrival of principal Rebotile Lesele, whose leadership has transformed both results and culture at the institution.

When Lesele took over in 2020, the school’s matric pass rate stood at just 33.3%.

Under her guidance, results soared: 70.9% in 2021, 89.3% in 2022, 93.8% in 2023, and 95.5% in 2024. This year, the school is aiming for a 100% pass rate, with more than 50 bachelor’s passes.

Lesele attributes the success to strategies such as mentoring, educator-learner adoption programmes, parental involvement, teacher and learner awards, effective monitoring of attendance, and extended learning sessions, including morning, afternoon, and Saturday classes.

The school has also taken a firm stand against gangsterism and substance abuse. Through a “No Drugs and Substance Abuse” campaign, regular patrols, police involvement, and annual parental pledges of accountability, the school has created a safe, disciplined learning environment.

To further support excellence, Charles Mathonsi offers teacher development programmes, a school-based support team for struggling learners, and afternoon remedial lessons. Top-performing Gr 12 learners are rewarded with cash prizes, laptops, and certificates to motivate excellence.

Despite concerns about limited parental support and discipline challenges among the Class of 2025, Lesele remains optimistic.

“As a school, we always strive to perform beyond our expectations. Hard work, determination, and patience can change any situation,” she said. “To my educators, parents, and learners, thank you for being an integral part of our journey. Your trust and partnership make a positive impact on our learners’ lives.”
