Limpopo EFF march to GGM over corruption claims

EFF protests in Giyani, calling for accountability, action on a corruption report, and support for hawkers and local businesses.

LIMPOPO – On Monday, September 29, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) marched to the Greater Giyani Municipality offices to submit a memorandum demanding action on alleged corruption and economic neglect.

The protest centres on the municipality’s failure to act on a forensic report concerning a controversial auction earlier this year.

Seven municipal items were reportedly sold without council approval, prompting a forensic investigation that recommended disciplinary action.

EFF chief whip Austin Mabasa criticised the municipality for inaction, noting that while the CFO was suspended, broader accountability is needed.

The EFF demands that the forensic report be made public and its recommendations implemented to restore public trust.

The memorandum also addresses economic exclusion, calling for hawkers displaced by construction near Giyani TVET College to be allocated new market stalls and compensated for demolished ones.

Additionally, the EFF called on the municipality to reclaim and revive the neglected Giyani Industrial Unit, previously a vital economic hub now in disrepair under the Lindow organisation’s control.

The EFF gave the municipality 14 days to respond or face escalation, including involving the Public Protector.

Dozens of supporters joined the march, chanting and holding placards demanding accountability and improved service delivery.

Cllr Thamsanqa Mabunda received the memorandum on behalf of Mayor Thandi Zitha, promising to forward it for consideration.
