Annual Christmas concert brings hope to Mopani
The Step Ahead Foundation’s Annual Christmas Concert in Mopani blends music, culture and social impact, promoting unity, healing and community resilience.

LIMPOPO – The Step Ahead Foundation is once again bringing festive cheer and unity to the Mopani District with its much-loved Annual Christmas Concert a celebration that blends music, culture, and social impact.
The concert began in 2023 as a small, heartfelt gathering in Khujwana village. It was inspired by the resilience of local families and survivors of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). What started as a modest carol evening under the stars has now grown into a cherished annual tradition.
Each year, the program is co-created with schools, youth councils, and survivors’ groups to ensure it reflects the community’s current themes of hope, healing, and togetherness. This year’s audience can expect traditional carols, Tsonga and Sepedi performances, spoken word poetry, and a candlelight tribute to GBVF survivors.
Several Heritage Day artists who recently partnered with Step Ahead Foundation will headline the concert, joined by youth leaders and community elders. The event is coordinated by the Foundation’s youth leadership team under the guidance of Executive Director Themba Confidence Mhlongo, who ensures the concert remains inclusive and community-driven.
Unlike commercial or church-based Christmas events, Step Ahead’s concert focuses on social change. Every performance carries a message from youth empowerment to cultural preservation. All proceeds and donations go toward initiatives such as the Foundation’s school shoe drive, GBVF survivor support programs, and youth leadership academy.
Over the years, the concert has become a symbol of unity and resilience. Families come together to celebrate, reflect, and reconnect, while performers, especially children, gain confidence and pride through participation.
Despite challenges such as limited funding and rural logistics, the Foundation continues to host the event through strong volunteer support and community ownership.
Mhlongo said the ultimate goal is to leave audiences with “full hearts and renewed hope” a reminder that even in difficult times, joy and community spirit remain powerful forces for healing.
