SAPS and SANDF teams are searching fast-moving waters in Giyani for a 5-year-old boy, missing since Thursday morning.

LIMPOPO – A major search operation is underway in Mbaula village, outside Giyani, as emergency services race against time to locate a missing five-year-old boy.

Siyanda Baloyi has been missing since early Thursday morning (January 15).

Mother and child swept away

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says preliminary reports indicate he and his mother were swept away by floodwaters while attempting to evacuate their water-filled home around 06:00.

The mother was later rescued by SANDF members after being caught in a tree. However, the child remains unaccounted for.

Intensified search in raging waters

The search effort, now intensified, involves a multi-disciplinary team from the SAPS Search and Rescue unit, SANDF, and Emergency Medical Services.

Teams are navigating dangerous and fast-moving waters in the area.

Authorities are appealing to anyone with information that could assist in safely locating Siyanda Baloyi to come forward. Information can be provided to Detective Lieutenant Colonel Mbalati JJ at 082 565 6491 or via Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Acting commissioner urges extreme caution

Speaking on the ongoing crisis, acting provincial police commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers, emphasised the critical importance of public cooperation and safety.

“Our multi-disciplinary teams will continue to navigate dangerous waters to reach and assist residents in distress. It is important that we prioritise safety, especially during these rainy conditions.”
