Schools in flood-hit Mopani, Vhembe to reopen Monday

The Limpopo Department of Education has delayed reopening schools in the worst flood-hit districts until January 19 due to inaccessibility.

LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Department of Education has confirmed that schools will reopen on Monday, January 19, in Mopani and Vhembe Districts.

The two regions are the most affected by the floods, which began on Sunday evening.

Provincial Spokesman, Mike Maringa, says they are unable to access some of the schools and therefore are not able to finalise the assessment of the damage. He says parents must ensure that learners are safe and must not attempt to go to school until normalcy returns.

Meanwhile, Mopani West Education District Director Phillipine Modika says that one of the challenges they face in the region is the failure to deliver food to schools, as well as the difficulty faced by teachers and learners in accessing schools from their homes.

She also advises parents and learners to stay safe and await the department’s directives. “Once we resume, the schools will come up with recovery plans to make up for the lost time,” Modika concludes.
