Limpopo man gets 20 years for murdering partner

Delvy Malatji has been sentenced to 20 years for murder and illegal firearm possession after he shot his partner in Mopani, in 2024.

LIMPOPO – Delvy Masilu Malatji (37) has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison by the Polokwane High Court for the murder of his partner, and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The sentence was handed down on Wednesday (January 21).

The conviction stems from an incident in August 2024 in the Mopani District. After a domestic dispute, the accused went to the victim’s parental home and later found her at a neighbour’s house, where he shot her multiple times, killing her instantly.

Malatji fled the scene but was swiftly apprehended by police. Upon his arrest, he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

He was subsequently charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The court imposed the following sentences:

  • Count 1 (Murder): 20 years’ imprisonment
  • Count 2 (Unlawful possession of a firearm): 5 years’ imprisonment
  • Count 3 (Unlawful possession of ammunition): 2 years’ imprisonment

The court ordered that the sentences for counts 2 and 3 run concurrently with the murder sentence, resulting in an effective 20-year prison term. Malatji was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the sentence. She praised the investigating officer, Sergeant Ngobeni Sizeka Collars, the prosecution team, and all involved for their dedication.

“This is a successful prosecution that sends a strong message that crimes of gender-based violence will not be tolerated and that perpetrators will face the full might of the law,” said Hadebe.
