Bees attack garden workers and family dogs in Aqua Park

A swarm of bees in Tzaneen killed a family dog, injured three garden workers and several pre-schoolers, before the hive was safely removed.

TZANEEN – A family in Aqua Park, Tzaneen, has been left devastated after a swarm of bees attacked their property on Tuesday morning, injuring three garden service workers and two family dogs.

Tragically, the family’s 18-month-old dog, Ben, died after being severely stung. In an attempt to escape the swarm, Ben jumped into the swimming pool but succumbed to his injuries. The younger dog, Basie, survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at a veterinary clinic.

Three garden service workers were also badly stung during the incident. Members of the Tzaneen Community Policing Forum (CPF) rushed them to hospital, two were taken to Mediclinic and one to Van Velden Hospital. All three were treated and discharged on Tuesday.

Homeowner Mariette de Beer told the Herald that she first learned of the attack when her husband, Dippies, received a call from their domestic worker, Maria.

“She told us there was a dark cloud of bees outside the house,” said De Beer. The beehive was later found high up in a tree on a neighbouring property.

Several learners at a nearby pre-school were also stung. Teachers acted quickly, moving the children to safety to prevent further injuries.

On Wednesday morning, a professional bee removal team successfully removed the swarm. The area has since been declared safe.

De Beer said she is grateful to the CPF, Ellie Potgieter from the SPCA, Dr Gary Middleton at Mediclinic, and other community members who responded swiftly to assist during the emergency.
