Maphutha Malatji Hospital puts mental wellness in the spotlight

The Molopa Foundation partnered with Maphutha Malatji Hospital to host its first sports and wellness day, encouraging physical activity and raising awareness of mental health.

PHALABORWA – “Men also experience mental health challenges and emotional breakdowns, but societal expectations often make it difficult for them to speak up and seek help,” says Mosa Mathebula, a participant at Maphutha Malatji Hospital’s first-ever sports and wellness day.

Mathebula emphasised the importance of initiatives that promote physical and mental well-being, particularly among men, adding that regular exercise helps relieve stress and improve mental health.

The Molopa Foundation-sponsored event was held on Wednesday, October 28, as the hospital marked the end of Mental Health Awareness Month. It attracted more than 150 hospital employees, partners and community members.

Participants took part in friendly netball and football matches, a 5km fun walk, aerobics, egg and sack races, as well as tug-of-war. Winners received medals and trophies.

Partnership promotes holistic wellness

Speaking on behalf of the Molopa Foundation, Aldecia Mafokwane said the partnership began when the foundation approached the hospital while conducting research into cancer response in Ba-Phalaborwa.

The hospital subsequently shared its plans for the wellness event, and the foundation expressed its willingness to support the initiative, which aligns with its mission.

Mafokwane said the initiative reflected the foundation’s belief that sustainable community development begins with holistic well-being, encompassing both physical and mental health.

She highlighted the foundation’s partnership with the Body & Mind Therapy Centre, led by occupational therapist Makungu Valoyi, which provides mental and physical healthcare support to learners in schools supported by the foundation.

Valoyi said the centre also assists individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties and financial stress, while supporting children with learning difficulties and developmental challenges.

Wellness day to become annual event

Meanwhile, Dr Sello Rasello emphasised that maintaining physical and mental wellness should be a priority for everyone, particularly employees working in demanding environments such as healthcare. “We have introduced sports practice sessions for our employees every Wednesday to encourage regular exercise and promote healthier lifestyles,” he said.

Rasello praised the Molopa Foundation for supporting various community development initiatives, describing it as a “jack of all trades”.

He also revealed that the hospital and the foundation were working on additional projects, that would be announced once the necessary processes had been completed.

“This is just the beginning,” said Rasello.

He confirmed that the hospital and the foundation would make the wellness day an annual event, held on the last Wednesday of October.
