Francolin College’s learner wins all 5 matches at chess tourney
Rising chess star Pholosho Malesa remains unbeaten this year after winning all five matches at a tournament.
PHALABORWA – Rising young chess player, Pholosho Malesa, delivered another outstanding performance after winning all five of his matches at a tournament held at Dr Ninakhulu Primary School on Saturday, April 18.
The talented Gr 10 learner from Francolin College was rewarded with a certificate and cash prize for his impressive achievement.
Although he won every match, Malesa admitted that he had mixed emotions after the event. “I was very happy even though I had not gotten first place, despite winning all five games,” he said.
Malesa explained that his chess journey began in 2024 when he was introduced to the game at school. He quickly made his mark by winning his first-ever tournament in February 2024.
He said the journey that followed was not always easy, as he finished in positions ranging between eighth and third place in several events. However, those experiences helped him grow as a player.
Aims for International Master title
In the same year, Malesa competed in his first provincial and national tournaments, which exposed him to stronger competition and further developed his skills.
By 2025, he had become one of the most dominant young players in the game, winning nearly every tournament he entered. His only setback came after one mistake that cost him a game and left him in fourth place.
Since starting competitive chess in 2024, Malesa has won numerous tournaments. He went almost a full year in 2025 without losing an over-the-board tournament game and remains unbeaten this year.
His ambition is to one day achieve the prestigious International Master title and compete overseas.
“My main motivation for playing in these tournaments is to continue my goal of one day obtaining the International Master title and playing abroad,” he said.
Coach praises dedication and balance
Malesa reflected on the recent competition, stating that he faced no major challenges, although his fourth-round match against Thato Raseala was his toughest of the day.
His coach, Libaret Ngobeni, praised his commitment and discipline.
“Malesa is a very dedicated and hardworking learner. I love the fact that he can balance chess practice and academics. I am very proud of him and wish that he can get sponsorship to study overseas,” he concluded.
