Sanral fast-tracks Orpen Road repairs

Sanral says repairs to the collapsed Orpen Road (R531) will begin as soon as emergency procurement approval is granted.

LIMPOPO – Sanral is prioritising the repairs of the Orpen Road (R531) in an effort to reopen the key route to the Kruger National Park (KNP).

Officials assess extensive structural failure

This is according to a delegation that visited the collapsed last week. Bushbuckridge Local Municipality Mayor Matlanatso Lydia Moroane, accompanied by Public Safety MMC, the ward councillor, and general managers Timba Flomina and Aubrey Mnisi, conducted a site visit to the collapsed section of the road.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to assess damage and fast-track interventions following the collapse of the key route on April 19.

The road’s closure is a significant disruption for tourists, freight operators, and local communities.

Sanral confirmed that repair work will begin once emergency procurement approval has been granted.

“We will commence with repairs as soon as emergency procurement approval is granted,” the agency said.

During the inspection, officials observed extensive structural failure along the affected section of the road, believed to have been caused by persistent heavy rainfall that weakened the underlying surface.

The damage has rendered the route unsafe for use and severely disrupted traffic flow in the area.

Warning signage installed to redirect motorists

As a precaution, temporary safety measures have been implemented, including the closure of the affected section and the installation of warning signage to redirect motorists.

Authorities have strongly advised road users to avoid the route and to make use of alternative roads while repairs are pending, particularly those travelling to the KNP.

Technical teams are currently undertaking a detailed assessment to determine the full scope of the damage.

Their findings will guide both immediate repair interventions and longer-term reconstruction plans aimed at strengthening the road against future weather-related impacts.

The municipality is working closely with provincial authorities and other stakeholders to mobilise resources and speed up the repair process.

Efforts are focused on restoring safe access as quickly as possible while ensuring that all necessary engineering standards are met.

Tourism and freight disrupted

The closure has raised concerns among tourism operators and local businesses who rely on consistent traffic volumes, especially given the road’s importance as a gateway to the Kruger National Park.

Authorities have urged motorists to remain patient, adhere to all posted signage, and plan their journeys using designated alternative routes.

Further updates on repair timelines are expected once technical assessments have been completed and procurement processes finalised.
