Toddler assault sparks calls for stronger protection of children
A toddler was sexually assaulted in Maphophe village during Child Protection Month, sparking outrage and an urgent police investigation.
TZANEEN – The brutal sexual assault of a 22-month-old toddler in Maphophe village has sent shockwaves through the community, sparking outrage and renewed calls for stronger protection of children.
The horrific incident, which occurred during Child Protection Month, has left communities devastated.
Mother found baby unable to stand
According to police reports, the mother of the young child woke up to find her baby unable to stand. Upon further inspection, she discovered that her child’s knee was swollen.
She immediately took the child to a local hospital, where medical professionals confirmed that the child had been sexually assaulted.
A case has been opened and is now under investigation.
A disturbing pattern
This incident comes hot on the heels of other recent tragedies involving young children.
Two children, aged two and five, lost their lives, while another child, aged 15, was raped; an alarming reminder that children are not yet safe from violence and exploitation.
MEC expresses outrage
MEC for Social Development, Florence Randzilani, expressed outrage and profound concern over the incident.
“Society must take a firm stand against this relentless brutality. Every community has a responsibility to foster a safe environment where children can grow, learn, and thrive,” she said.
“We call on community members, leaders and all stakeholders to unite in protecting our children.”
Appeal for information
She urged anyone with information to come forward and assist law enforcement in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
“Our children are our future. We owe them safety, love and protection. The department remains committed to working tirelessly to prevent such tragedies and to support victims and their families,” said Randzilani.
