TZANEEN – What started as a personal decision to celebrate a birthday differently has grown into a developing tradition of community impact, with the Books & Beyond Foundation hosting its second annual community outreach at Pholoahlaba Primary School in Greater Tzaneen on Friday, August 28.

Hundreds turn out for second annual outreach

Founded by Limpopo-born actress, entrepreneur and community builder Tolry Sebasha, the initiative brought together more than 500 people, including 506 learners, parents, teachers, community members, supporters and members of the South African Police Service.

The outreach focused on education, literacy, creativity, culture and providing practical support to children and families in need.

A birthday leap of faith

Sebasha said the foundation’s journey began with a simple desire to give back to children on her birthday.

“I wanted to celebrate my birthday in a valuable way, in a manner of giving back to children. I did not know where to start or how to do it, but I decided to take a leap of faith,” she said.

Empowering children beyond material support

That leap has since developed into a broader vision centred on empowering children rather than simply providing material assistance.

“We don’t simply give. We empower wisdom. We create space for children to be who they are. We recognise their gifts. We encourage them to dream,” Sebasha said.

Building a culture of reading

She said the foundation wants to help build a culture of reading among children and develop confident young readers.

“Reading is where education and learning begin,” she said, adding that the foundation is seeking organisations and sponsors to help print and distribute more Tondise books following an overwhelmingly positive response from children.

Community and business support

The outreach was supported by organisations, businesses and individuals, including MHI Africa, Nkutwala Construction, Tshwambo Civil and Roads, Hilda Kwetepane, Sinah Nkuna, Maite Emission Sibasa, Spar Tzaneen and Tzaneen SAPS.
