Phalaborwa schoolboys earn provincial rugby call-up

Two promising rugby players from Phalaborwa’s Fauna Park Primary have secured provincial selection after impressive performances in Polokwane.

PHALABORWA – Two promising young rugby players from Fauna Park Primary School have secured places in the provincial rugby team after outstanding performances during recent provincial trials in Polokwane.

Provincial trials in Polokwane secure selection

Kgaugelo Kgwete (13) and Ndzalama Mathebula (12) qualified for the provincial team following trials held at Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos.

The talented duo impressed selectors through their consistent performances during matches and trials. Kgwete said the journey to provincial level required determination and sacrifice.

“It brings me a lot of pride and honour to be selected for the provincial rugby team. The journey has not been easy because I had to balance schoolwork and rugby, face strong competition during trials, travel for matches, and remain mentally strong under pressure,” he said.

Mathebula described the opportunity as both exciting and rewarding. “It feels amazing to be part of the selected few chosen to represent the province in schoolboy rugby. It is a great opportunity and an honour for me,” he said.

The young players also reflected on some of the challenges they faced on their journey to provincial level.

Kgwete said one of his biggest obstacles was convincing his parents that he wanted to pursue rugby seriously, while Mathebula had to adapt quickly to the sport as it was his first time playing rugby competitively.

Coaches praise talent and commitment

Coaches Theo Chockolo and Trinity Mthombeni praised the players for their work ethic and commitment.

“We first noticed their potential during training sessions because of their work ethic, confidence, and willingness to learn. They showed natural rugby ability and leadership qualities from an early stage,” said the coaches.

The players are currently preparing for their next provincial fixture scheduled for Friday, May 22.

Players seek support for Craven Week costs

Meanwhile, the boys are seeking donations and sponsorships to assist them with costs for the upcoming Craven Week tournaments.

The cost is R11 500 per player, and any support from the community or local businesses would be greatly appreciated. For donations, community members can contact the school on 015 781 2725.
