Leolo Community Trust fun walk draws 132 in Selwana
The next Leolo Community Trust fun walk is set for Mashishimale on August 1, chairperson Joseph Malatji has confirmed.
PHALABORWA – The second annual Leolo Community Trust Fun Walk kicked off with a bang at the Selwana Tribal Council on Saturday, July 18, attracting 132 participants and surpassing last year’s turnout.
The event, which aims to encourage healthier lifestyles in all five communities, drew participants of all ages, with children and adults taking part in either the 5km or 10km routes. Organisers hailed the increased participation as a sign that the initiative is gaining momentum in the community.
Participants 60 years and older completed the 5km route, while those younger than 60 took on the more demanding 10km challenge. The event catered for men and women across six age categories.
A fun walk, not a race
“This year we have done better than last year. The only issue I noticed was that a few participants were running, even though this is a fun walk and not a race. If we can correct that next year, the event will be even better,” said Peter Malatji, Selwana Trust representative.
Register early, organisers urge
Malatji also appealed to community members to register before participating in future events, saying that registration helps organisers plan accurately for refreshments, prizes, water, and other logistics.
Cash prizes across six categories
Participants competed in the u/15, u/30, u/45, u/60, u/70 and over/70 categories.
Winners received R1 000, followed by R750 for second place, R500 for third, R350 for fourth, R250 for fifth, and R200 for those finishing between sixth and 20th.
Category winners also received medals.
Category winners were Issencia Mokgalaka (u/15 girls), Ngwako Malatji (u/15 boys), Perfect Sithole (u/30 women), Silvester Mokgalaka (u/30 men), Happy Selepe (u/45 women), Admiro Sethole (u/45 men), Mmakoma Malatji (u/60 women), Mogale Machete (u/60 men), Maphoko Machethe (u/70 women), Solomon Mashale (u/70 men), Meriam Mokgalaka (over/70 women) and John Mokgalaka (over/70 men).
“Winning this prize money means a lot to me. I am going to buy clothes,” said Ngwako Malatji.
