Hoedspruit’s Hannes Malan reaches Moer ‘n Boer final

Training alongside UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis has been one of the most memorable parts of Malan's MMA journey.

HOEDSPRUIT – From raising Cape buffalo on the farm to stepping into the MMA ring, Hoedspruit farmer Hannes Malan is proving that hard work, discipline and a willingness to embrace new challenges can take a person far beyond the farm gate.

Malan is one of the finalists in Moer ‘n Boer season 3, a reality competition that sees farmers transform into mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters while testing both their physical and mental strength.

A life rooted on the farm

Growing up on a farm in the Greater Kruger area, agriculture has always been a way of life for Malan.

“I grew up in Hoedspruit on a farm where we started breeding Cape buffalo. In 2007, we sold that farm and moved to another property in Lydenburg, where we relocated our buffalo. I’ve been on a farm my whole life, working alongside my dad,” he said.

Today, the family farms Cape buffalo and cattle while also producing teff, which is baled as feed for their livestock.

A friend’s dare sparks a new challenge

His journey into Moer ‘n Boer came about thanks to a little encouragement from a friend.

“Honestly, it’s my friend Ruan Burger’s fault,” he said. “He’s from Letsitele and convinced me to sign up. We both made it through to the finals.”

Although many contestants had to adapt to the demands of MMA training, Malan already had a passion for combat sports. “I’ve always liked MMA and martial arts, so it was really just a matter of training harder with more boxing and jiu-jitsu.”

Farm life makes for good training

Balancing farming responsibilities with an intense training schedule has been less difficult than many would expect.

“Training has always been part of my life. No matter what kind of day it has been on the farm, I always make time to train,” said Malan.

Training alongside a UFC champion

One of the highlights of the competition has been the opportunity to train alongside UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis.

“Training with Dricus and learning a few things from him has definitely been the most memorable part of this journey.”

Despite the national exposure, Malan said he has tried to remain grounded. “I’ve tried to stay the same person I was before, and hopefully I’ll come out the other side just the same.”

He believes the competition has simply been another opportunity to push himself beyond his comfort zone. “I’ve done jiu-jitsu, cycling and triathlon for years. This has just been another way to test myself mentally and physically.”

Community support ahead of the final

Throughout the competition, the support from his family, friends and the wider community has kept him motivated.

“They’ve all been right behind me. Everyone wants to know what’s happening and when the fights are. The main event is on September 19, and a lot of friends, family and community members will be there. I’m really grateful for their support.”

Malan hopes viewers take one important lesson from his journey.

“Never be afraid to try something new in life. Never be afraid of a challenge.”

Advice for future contestants

He also has advice for farmers considering entering future seasons of the show.

“Start training before you enter. The try-outs are physically demanding, so make sure you’re fit and ready.”

Looking beyond the competition, Malan remains focused on both his farming operation and personal growth.

“There’s always room for growth. I want to take on bigger challenges, stay adaptable, and trust that the Lord will be in control and see us through whatever comes.”
