Giyani cop in court over liquor licence corruption
A Giyani police warrant officer has appeared in court for allegedly taking payment to process a liquor licence application that was never properly done.
LIMPOPO – A 60-year-old warrant officer attached to Giyani SAPS appeared before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of corruption following his arrest by members of the Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.
The court appearance stems from allegations that in July 2020, the police officer allegedly misrepresented that he would assist a complainant with the processing of a liquor licence application and received payment for the purported service.
The complainant later discovered that the application had not been properly processed and reported the matter to the police.
Investigation and arrest
The matter was referred to the Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for investigation.
Upon completion of the investigation, the case was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who authorised the issuing of a J50 warrant of arrest. The suspect was arrested on Monday.
Bail granted
During his court appearance, the accused was granted bail of R5 000. The matter was remanded to August 28 for a Regional Court date.
