Mrs South Africa finalist raises R100k for cancer

Aleché Landman hosted 35 women from Tzaneen and Letsitele at an event focused on self-defence and firearm training, while highlighting the need for greater protection of women.

LIMPOPO – Mrs South Africa finalist Aleché Landman hosted a cancer money-raising event at the CLB Matuma Shooting Range near the Eiland recently, bringing together 35 women from Letsitele and Tzaneen.

The event raised R100 000 for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

Women learn self-defence

Members of Girls on Fire from Johannesburg also attended the event, where they taught participants basic self-defence techniques.

The class was held against the backdrop of ongoing concerns about violence against women in South Africa.

Participants also received firearm training from instructors at the shooting range.

‘Women should not have to change how they live’

Landman said the focus should be on protecting women and holding perpetrators accountable rather than telling women to change their behaviour to avoid becoming victims.

“Stop going alone, stop driving alone at night, stop wearing that, and stop going there alone. Why are we still telling women to stop?

“It is time we start protecting women, holding perpetrators accountable, speaking up and taking action. We must start teaching our sons to treat women better and start treating the women in our lives better,” she said.

“Women should not have to change how they live just to stay alive.”

Landman in Mrs South Africa final

Landman will compete against 29 other finalists for the Mrs South Africa title at Emperors Palace on November 13.
