Phalaborwa SPCA: Call us, do not kill snakes
Not every snake is a threat, says the SPCA, which wants Phalaborwa residents to stay calm, give snakes space and phone 082 494 2147 when one turns up at home.
PHALABORWA – The Phalaborwa SPCA has urged residents not to harm or kill snakes found in residential areas, reminding the community of their important role in maintaining the natural balance of the environment.
Python rescued in town
The appeal follows the recent rescue of an African rock python that entered a residential area in Phalaborwa.
The SPCA responded to the incident and safely rescued the snake.
With assistance from the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet), the python was subsequently released in a suitable area away from homes and people.
Snakes keep nature in balance
The SPCA said snakes form an important part of the ecosystem and contribute to a healthy natural environment by helping to regulate prey populations.
What to do if you find a snake
Although encountering a snake in a home or yard can be frightening, residents are urged not to attempt to kill, capture or handle the animal themselves.
Instead, residents should keep a safe distance, avoid disturbing the snake and contact the SPCA for assistance.
Awareness can ease fear
The organisation said greater awareness was needed to help communities understand that not every snake poses a threat and that wildlife should be treated with care and respect.
“Let’s teach our community that not every snake is a threat, and every animal has a role to play in nature,” the SPCA said.
The SPCA appealed to residents to choose compassion over fear and work with animal welfare organisations to ensure that snakes and other wildlife are safely protected and relocated where necessary. Call 082 494 2147 if you encounter a snake.
