Mayor attends the Zama Zama tournament
The Greater Giyani Municipality mayor, Thandi Zitha, along with Christinah Zitha, head of the sports, arts and culture portfolio as well as the portfolio chairperson, Ngobeni Xihlamariso, attended the annual Zama Zama soccer tournament finals held at 14B on December 31.

The soccer tournament which is the brainchild of the internationally renowned soccer referee, Victor Hlungwani, has over the years grown from just being an ordinary tournament targeting a particular locality, to drawing interests from teams as far as Gauteng.
“In 1995 when I was doing my first year at Tivumbeni College of Education, I realised that the youth in my village Homu 14B were fighting because there was nothing to do during the December holidays.

“I then approach Induna Ndlovu who offered a goat for the tournament and we played the tournament with four teams. “The following year the tournament increased to eight teams participating and in 2000 I named the tournament the Zama Zama Sports Challenge. Up to today it is known as the Zama Zama and has become a brand on its own. “The 2021 challenge was won by Mandla ku-lova from Dzingi who walked away with R50 000 in prize money,” said Hlungwane.
For her part, the mayor will fast-track the completion of the much-awaited Homu 14B Sports Centre to ensure that the tournament and other initiatives take place in a decent facility. She was particularly impressed by the number of people the tournament attracted.
