Mpheni Defenders tighten grip on ABC Motsepe League

Mpheni Home Defenders extend their lead in ABC Motsepe League Stream A, while Tzaneen United drop points and relegation battles intensify.

LIMPOPO – Log leaders Mpheni Home Defenders tightened their grip at the top of the ABC Motsepe League Stream A standings after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Phalaborwa United over the weekend.

The crucial win comes at a time when their closest challengers, Tzaneen United, dropped valuable points, allowing Mpheni to widen the gap at the top.

Mpheni went into the weekend aware that maintaining momentum was essential in their quest for promotion. Their narrow victory proved decisive, not only adding three points to their tally but also increasing the pressure on second-placed Tzaneen United, who were held to a goalless draw by Selwane White Vultures.

The stalemate denied Tzaneen the opportunity to close in on the top spot and instead handed Mpheni the advantage they needed to create breathing space at the top. Just a week ago, the title race remained wide open, with the possibility that a slip by Mpheni combined with a Tzaneen victory could have reduced the gap to a single point.

However, the latest results have shifted the balance significantly in favour of Mpheni, who now looks increasingly difficult to catch as the season progresses. Meanwhile, for Phalaborwa United, the defeat was a setback in their efforts to climb into the upper half of the table.

The loss leaves them locked in a tight contest with Selwane White Vultures, who occupy ninth position with 14 points from 12 matches, while Phalaborwa United sit just above them with 15 points from 13 matches. With Selwane having a game in hand, the battle between the two sides remains finely poised, and any slip-up could see positions change quickly.

Tzaneen United and Nkowankowa Continental

Elsewhere, struggles continue for Nkowankowa Continental, who played out a goalless draw against fourth-placed Mukondeni Young Chiefs. While holding a top 4 side to a draw may appear to be a positive result under normal circumstances, as it shows some performance improvement, it can never be acceptable at Nkowankowa Continental.

This is because the team remains rooted at the bottom of the table and has yet to win a single match since the start of the tournament.

Their inability to convert performances into wins has left them in a precarious position, with relegation becoming an increasingly likely outcome as the season moves forward.

Despite the difficult situation, the team has no option but to continue fulfilling fixtures, as withdrawing mid-season would carry serious consequences for them. Their focus now shifts to salvaging pride and attempting to secure at least one win before the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Baduzah Celtics have emerged as one of the most improved sides in recent weeks. Once hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone, they have managed to turn their fortunes around.

Their latest 1–0 victory against Vondwe XI Bullets over the weekend lifted them to sixth place, marking a remarkable recovery and easing fears of relegation.

Meanwhile, with the season entering a decisive phase, Mpheni Home Defenders appear firmly in control of the title race, while the battle for survival and mid-table positions continues to intensify.
