Wik Memorial Triathlon draws large turnout

Stanford Lake College hosted the annual Wik Memorial Triathlon, drawing a large crowd for a fun, muddy day of racing and community spirit.

LIMPOPO – Participants came in their numbers for the annual Wik Memorial Triathlon that took place at Stanford Lake College (SLC) on Sunday, March 16.

This event has become a ‘must do’ in the area, with deep roots in the community, drawing outsiders and locals to a real ‘family feel’ event.

“As usual the weather did its part with lots of rain in the week leading up to the event, ensuring the event was full of splashes and lots of mud. Luckily, the Sunday had some clear weather, and the day was enjoyed to the fullest by both participants and spectators alike.

“The event consisted of three main races, the Stanfordian, the Wik individual and the Wik team relay,” said Tiaan Fullard, the event coordinator.

He said that the Stanfordian, the most strenuous event, consisted of a 1km swim, 23km MTB and a 10km run and could only be done individually.

The Wik individual consisted of a 500m swim, a 15km MTB and a 5km run. The Wik team relay covered the same route as the Wik individual, but teams of three participated in relay style, with each participant doing a specific discipline.

“The day was a great success with a good turnout and many happy participants. Stanford Lake College was also represented on the day by staff, learners and parents participating. Some top results were Steven Willson taking third place and old boy Casper Venter taking second in the Stanfordian. In the Wik team relay, Nick Dando, Andreas Michael Toulou and Levin von Bethmann-Hollweg took first place in the junior men’s division.

Ilne Kotzé, Mika Jones and Elia Jones took second place in the junior women’s division and Murray Newton, Alastair Wiltshire and Alessia Dowle took third place in the junior teams overall,” he added.

Other SLC participants included Tatenda Mabayah in the Wik individual and Xander Hageman, Shane Friedrichs, Katie Forrest, Amy Taylor-Bennett, Selwyn Whittington, Aeron Williams, Kyla Hamer and Tristan Berrie all took part in the Wik team relay in their various teams.

Matthew Scriven and Judah Leher took part in the Wik individual event.

“It was a great day for SLC, and we are thankful to all our supporters.”

He thanked PPS Petroleum, Trophy Toyota, Dust Suppressions, North East Office Equipment and Miami Canners for their support.
