Celtics champions of Pertu tourney

"Winning the tournament is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and unity," says Phalaborwa Celtics’ communications manager, Clerence Ngobeni.

LIMPOPO – Celebrations erupted at Movers Ground in Maseke on Sunday, May 4, as Phalaborwa Celtics FC clinched the Pertu Tournament title in a nail-biting finish.

After two intense final matches against Dinoko Black Aces, both ending in 1-1 draws, the Celtics sealed their victory with a 4-2 win in a penalty shootout, marking a proud moment for the club and its supporters.

The intense final began on Saturday, May 3, and ended in a 1-1 stalemate, forcing a replay the following day. Once again, both teams held each other to a 1-1 draw, sending the match into penalties where Phalaborwa Celtics triumphed with a 4-2 win, earning them the prestigious title and a grand prize of R24 000.

Phalaborwa Celtics’ communications manager, Clerence Ngobeni, expressed immense pride in the team’s achievement.

“The players, coaching staff, and everyone involved are thrilled with this victory. Winning the tournament is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and unity that this group has shown throughout the competition. It is a proud moment for the entire club and our supporters. We have achieved something special together,” he said.

The Pertu Tournament kicked off on Friday, March 21, with the Celtics playing five matches, including the replay. They secured victories over Brazil (3-2), Selati (1-0), and Blackpool (4-2) before facing Dinoko Black Aces twice in the final.

Ngobeni reflected on one of their toughest battles.

“The match against Blackpool was one for the ages. Blackpool has remained a hardcore team to play against, and they have beaten us in some serious matches. This was a must-win for us. Thrashing them 4-2 was just a statement to every team. We are coming, and with full force.”

Standout performances in the final came from several key players. Team captain Shepperd ‘Khathaza’ Mathebula delivered a crucial assist in the dying minutes. Hlulani ‘Manyama’ Khosa showed grit and determination by playing through a head injury, and Karabo ‘Masweet’ Phokane continued his consistent run, scoring the equaliser and proving to be a dependable presence throughout the tournament.

“On behalf of the entire team, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to all our incredible supporters and fans. Your unwavering passion, energy, and belief in us have been a driving force throughout this journey. Whether you were cheering from the stands or supporting us from afar, this victory is as much yours as it is ours. Thank you for standing with us every step of the way. We truly could not have done it without you,” Ngobeni concluded.
