Tzaneen rider shines at Sabie Xperience MTB race

Alan Gordon impressed at the Sabie Xperience MTB race, showcasing endurance and skill across challenging trails with teammate Jan Withaar.

TZANEEN – Tzaneen professional cyclist Alan Gordon recently took part in the three-day Sabie Xperience MTB race, teaming up with fellow rider Jan Withaar. The event, known for its scenic trails and demanding climbs, tested riders’ endurance and technical skills over multiple stages.

Gordon is a member of the Insect Science team, also known as the Kings of Neon.

Gordon, who trains six days a week for about three hours a day, said interval training plays a key role in building strength and speed.

“Sometimes it gets mentally tough with all the training and travelling for races, but I’m lucky to have a very supportive wife. She often travels with me when the logistics aren’t too hectic,” he said.

He praised the Sabie Xperience for its well-organised structure, varied terrain, and breathtaking scenery. The race featured different categories to accommodate all skill levels and included a time-trial for added excitement.

“This is one of my favourite races on the annual calendar. It’s always such a pleasure to return and enjoy the immaculate trails and friendly faces,” Gordon added.

Gordon also recently competed in the Waterberg Traverse, held from May 9 to 11. Now in its second year, the event already attracts riders from across the country. While the daily stages were relatively short at 55km, the terrain was anything but easy.

“The routes were mostly technical single tracks with steep climbs and descents. This year, the added mud from heavy rains made things even more challenging,” said Gordon, who finished an impressive fourth overall.

Withaar shared his experience of the event, which featured both Lite and Challenge categories.

“It was great that the categories shared trails in places; it gave everyone a chance to see how different riders approach the terrain,” he said.

He noted that the second day was particularly demanding.

“Covering 66km with 2 200m of climbing tested our resilience. But we committed to every metre,” he said.

“The final stage was my favourite. The weather was amazing on the first two days, and light showers on the last morning made the ride even more memorable. it brought out the little boy in me.”

Gordon also competed in the XC Marathon Champs at Karkloof last weekend, where South Africa’s new national champion was crowned.
