Nkowankowa woman runs 260km for mental health awareness

Jamela Mushwana will run 260km to raise mental health awareness and support vulnerable families, with donations going to learners in need.

LIMPOPO – Jamela Mushwana, an avid runner from Nkowankowa, will run 260km to raise awareness for mental health and support vulnerable communities.

Partnering with the Hope Givers Foundation (HGF), she will begin her journey in Acornhoek on Monday, August 4, and conclude it on Sunday, August 10, at the HGF headquarters in Muhlava village, outside Tzaneen.

After completing the run, Mushwana plans to give back by donating sanitary pads, cosmetics, and school shoes to learners in Burgersdorp and Gavaza villages.

She also aims to identify and support impoverished families on an ongoing basis. Her passion for mental health advocacy stems from personal experience.

In 2019, Mushwana lost her belongings, including her cars, and became estranged from friends and family.

“It was the first time I truly experienced lack and emotional isolation,” she said. “I fell into depression, but the support from my children, siblings, and father helped me through.”

Her healing journey began when friends Norah Shikwambana and Shirley Mashele introduced her to running. “Running brings me peace; it clears my mind and connects me spiritually. It became my therapy,” she shared.

In 2024, Mushwana completed her first Comrades Marathon alongside her father and two brothers. She finished the race again this year and encourages others to take up running for both physical and mental wellness.

To support her awareness campaign and fundraising efforts, the public is encouraged to donate R150 or more. For more information or to contribute, contact Jamela at 064 508 8065.
