Fransies players represent SA in Spain

Two Frans du Toit High School players competed internationally in the Global Schools Challenge, gaining valuable elite-level exposure in Spain.

PHALABORWA – Two rugby players from Frans du Toit High School recently represented South Africa at the Global Schools Challenge held in Cambrils, Spain.

Lukhanyo Mpayipheli and Xavier Buitendag were selected through UXI Sports, an invitational rugby programme that identifies promising talent on school level. The international tournament brought together top school teams from around the world, providing elite-level competition and valuable international exposure.

The two players joined other selected players from across South Africa to represent the UXI Panthers and UXI Tigers, competing against schools from various countries. Presentation Brothers’ College from Ireland emerged as the overall winners of the competition.

Mpayipheli, a Gr 12 learner who plays at prop, said the experience was both challenging and rewarding. “This wasn’t a normal school rugby competition, it was very competitive. I learnt a lot on the field and off it. I made new friends, and it was a really good experience for me,” he said, adding that he was grateful to have been selected.

Xavier Buitendag,

Buitendag said his selection came as a surprise, but he appreciated the opportunity. “The food and accommodation were something to remember, and the competition was hard and physical. I wish more learners from small towns and schools could get the experience and opportunity I had,” he said.

The players’ selection highlights the growing rugby talent at the Fransies and reflects the strength of players emerging from the Phalaborwa community.

The first team’s first match in the Noordvaal division 3 league will be on March 7.
