Athletes from all over enjoyed the tough but fun Spring Opener in Tzaneen

The Tzaneen Marathon Club hosted yet another successful Spring Opener on the premises of Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre on August 26.

More than 400 athletes from all over the Country took part in the run.

Athletes found the run more difficult than last year, it was also a faster run on some parts of the course.

50-59 21km ladies winners. Rosa Viljoen the category winner and Suzette Dippenaar from Lifestyle.

Like last year the Spring Opener was ideal and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly.

The winners in both the 10km and 21,1km for men came from Gauteng, while Limpopo dominated in the women’s sections.

Tlou Peu, the winner from last year defended his title successfully.

His winning time of 1:10:43 was some 28 seconds faster than last year’s time.

Phuti Mohale was only 17 seconds behind the winner.

60-69 21km men winner. Stephen Nkemelery the category winner and Neil van Rooyen from Panarottis.

The women’s section was dominated by Thabiso Mabasa in a time of 1:34:44 with the second lady almost two minutes behind the young winner.

Thabiso is still a junior athlete and there is a bright future for this local athlete.

The winner of the 10km, Lesike Peu’s winning time of 32min was much faster than last year’s winning time.

Phute Sethowa, a local athlete, came second in a time of 32:26. The women’s 10km was won by Mavis Mathebula in a time of 49:57.

The club would like to thank BB Motors, Lifestyle Centre, Curves, Pam Golding and Panarotti’s as their main sponsors, while van Heerdens Pharmacy, Miami Canners and Premium Trucking also contributed to the success of the event. Several companies manned water points along the route to assist the runners with water and cold drinks and the club would like to thank them for their contribution to the success of the race.
