Phalaborwa: Blackpool now indisputably Mmatjie tournament’s best

Blackpool forward, Maxanduma Ngoveni, claims that the tournament's teams will be wary when playing against his team in the next tournament.

A regular time goal from Maxanduma Ngoveni gave Blackpool Football Club a 1-0 victory over Mhlanga Madrid Football Club to win the Mmatjie Top 32 Soccer Tournament at Selwane.

Blackpool’s top goal scorer drilled home the winner in the last minute of regular time to secure a victory for the tournament’s most promising team on Saturday, January 18.

The closest both sides came to breaking the deadlock during the game was when both teams hit the woodwork a number of times.

Just like the tournament’s semi-finals, there was drama before the end of extra time as Blackpool were awarded a free-kick at the edge of the box, but the free-kick was hit with too much power before deflecting off to the grandstands.

The champions Blackpool walked away with R30 000, new full soccer kits, and a trophy with medals. Runners-up Mhlanga Madrid only received half the amount in prize money, a full soccer kit, and medals.

Players and supporters of Blackpool Football Club pose for a photo after winning the game by a single goal.

“We would like to thank our community leaders, the teams, the people from Selwane and everyone from the surrounding villages for your continuous support,” stated one of the organisers of the tournament, Shai.

He also said that he would like to thank the Selwane SAPS Satellite for monitoring the tournament, the sponsor of the tournament. He also congratulated the disciplined teams and supporters.
