Vhelaphi has deep love for running

Enthusiastic runner, Vhelaphi Masingi is a local athlete who recently participated in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.

Even though it was the first time he ran the Cape Town Marathon, he managed to finish the 42.2km in 3 hours and 36 minutes. The race is one of the world’s prestigious city races and is open to a range of athletes from elite to social.

Along the spectacular route they passed Table Mountain, ran along the Atlantic Ocean, passed the Madiba statue at City Hall in the CBD up to the hustle and bustle of Woodstock. Masingi from Burgersdorp village outside Tzaneen, started his running career in 2013, but never took it seriously.

He joined Nkowankowa Athletics Club in 2018, but he only started taking it seriously after he obtained his ASA running license from the local club. He is now a member of Waterfall City Athletics Club in Midrand as he is currently based in Johannesburg. Masingi told the Herald that he loves running, because it keeps him fit and healthy.

He has greatly improved since the beginning of lockdown as he had more time to train. “I used to comfortably run times of between 5:40 minutes and 6:15 minutes per kilometer, but now I run an average of 4:30 minutes to 5 minutes per kilometer,” he said. He has a number of marathons under his belt such as the Soweto Marathon. He will be participating in the Gauteng RAC Tough One (32km) and the Kosmos 3in1 marathon next year in March.
