Cllr Tau to apply second time for bail
Local ANC councillor, Precious Poppy Tau - accused of armed robbery by a number of hitchhikers on the N4 highway - will appear again before the Springs Magistrates Court on Friday, 28 March, for a second bail application.
Cllr Tau and her husband were both denied bail a week after their arrest on 25 February and have remained in Police custody since.
Cllr Tau and her husband are accused of robbing at least eight people while offering them lifts between Middelburg and Springs during November 2013.
One of the victims identified Councillor Tau at the municipality after recognizing the vehicle at the parking area of the Steve Tshwete Municipality building. She informed Police who arrested her the same day.
The other victims, some from Middelburg and others Machadodorp and Springs, recognised Cllr Tau in a photograph published in the Middelburg Observer.
She is accused of threatening victims with a firearm followed by a strip search before dumping them in isolated places.
SAPS are investigating two cases in Springs and at least one in Middelburg.
