Thabang Mahlangu was electrocuted by a 88kV cable in an isolated area, and there was evidence of vandalism, according to the Steve Tshwete Municipality.

Mahlangu was discovered by passers-by who heard his screams for help as he was in excruciating pain.

His condition at the Middelburg Hospital was said to be improving although but nurses did not want to give full details on his recovery. They only confirmed that he was still receiving care at the hospital.

• The Steve Tshwete local municipality sustained losses amounting to more than R422 000 due to cable theft between June 2013 and February 2014, according to Town Electrical Engineer, Mr Raymond Grunig.

Given the growth and development of Middelburg and considering the current installed underground cable network – it was a relatively small amount and had very little negative impact on electricity supply to residential households, industrial areas and central business district, he said.

“The network is well protected and where their are weak points we have appointed security guards,” said Mr Grunig.
