Baby found in bag

The corpse of a newborn baby girl was found in her mother's handbag.

According to information the woman, who is allegedly from Marikana, was travelling in a taxi when her fellow passengers saw that she has started to bleed.

She was taken to the Middelburg Hospital where the doctor who examined her, found signs that she has recently given birth.

The woman, whose name cannot be mentioned before she appears in court, denied being pregnant or giving birth.

A bag belonging to the woman was searched and the naked body of a baby girl was found inside.

The mother is currently under police guard at the Middelburg Hospital.

She is being charged with concealment of birth.

Captain Khanyisile Zwane said that a post mortem will determine whether the baby was stillborn or whether she died after being born.

If the latter is true, the woman might also face a charge of murder.
