Karin Labuschagne, who took the video, can be heard pleading with the group of men to stop the assault. She identifies herself as a journalist and warns that she is filming the incident. The incident happened on Sunday morning.

Some of the men involved in the assault then attempt to get her to stop filming. A security guard intervenes and tries to shield the man from the angry crowd.

After attempts by petrol attendants for her to stop filming, a man in civilian clothes tries to explain to her why the assault is taking place before the video ends.

Ultra City management failed to respond to requests for comment. According to the Middelburg police, no case has been opened.

Ultra City has been riddled with crime in the past, with theft out of motor vehicles and bank card fraud at the top of the list. Criminal gangs, equipped with scimming devices that reads the magnetic strips on cards, move from rest stop to rest stop as far as Nelspruit along the N4, a popular tourist route.

They target unsuspecting travellers for their bank cards or valuables in their vehicles. Tourists usually have valuables like cameras or laptops amongst their luggage.

Foreign nationals also seldom have the time and resources to travel back to South Africa to attend the criminal case, making them the perfect targets.
