Man shot and killed in armed robbery

A 23 year old man from Avalon, Mhluzi, was shot dead during an armed robbery at Netsile Tavern on Monday night at 21:30.

He has been identified as Beniton Mashifane and died at the Middelburg hospital after sustaining a single gunshot wound to the head.

According to the father of the deceased, David Mashifane, three suspects were escaping when his son was shot.

“My bakkie broke down and we pushed it into a neighbours yard. As we looked up three armed men approached me and pointed a gun to my head. They demanded money,” Mashifane said.

He took them inside the tavern and handed over all the cash in the tills. But the suspects were not satisfied and took Mashifane into his bedroom where they found more money.

They then left the house.

“As they were leaving they accosted my son in the street and several gunshots were fired. I ran outside and saw my child on the ground, bleeding profusely from his head”.

Mashifane rushed his son to the Middelburg Hospital but it was too late and he was declared dead.

The incident has angered residents of Avalon who are demanding Police action. Several crime meetings have been held in this regard and according to Mhluzi Police the situation remains volatile in Avalon.

The Mhluzi SAPS are investigating the incident and have asked the public to come forward with information that could lead to the arrests of the suspects. They can be contacted at 013 242 1021.
