Update: N11 road closed as strike escalates

Protest action along the N11 road between Middelburg and Groblersdal has escalated and the road is now closed.

Most vehicles are being forced to make a u-turn as more than 100 protesters have blocked the road.

The situation escalated last night around 21:00 when “outside protesters” were brought in to help their “comrades” with strike action.

Yesterday the situation was largely peaceful but negotiations between the construction workers and the contractors seemed to have reached a deadlock.

“The road is now closed and the public are urged to take alternate routes,” Rian Ilse of HHO said on Friday morning.“We don’t know when this situation will be resolved but we are trying to have the road opened as soon as possible”.

He said that striking workers were intimidating private personnel who were tasked with operating the various Stop/Go points along the road.

“The Stop/Go points are no longer operating and we were thus forced to closed the road”.

The strike action will also result in delays to the construction project, HHO confirmed.
