Hijacked vehicle recovered
A car that was hijacked near the Meyersbridge in Middelburg on Friday afternoon, was pulled over near Stoffberg in an excellent example of team work between farmers and police.
The parties involved requested to remain anonymous for security reasons.
Reports of a hijacked Volkswagen Golf in Middelburg was received shortly after 16:00.
According to w.o. Lize de Witt, the driver of the car alleged that he was travelling from Ogies via Middelburg to
Limpopo. He gave four men, who were hitch-hiking, a lift from eMalahleni. They wanted to go to Burgersfort.
When they got to the Meyersbridge in Middelburg, the men pointed the driver of the car with fire arms and ordered him to stop and get into the backseat. The man got out of the car but, instead of getting into the back seat, he managed to run away.
The four suspects fled with his car. The incident is said to have happened at 15:55.
Reports of the hijacked vehicle reached a police officer who was returning to Middelburg after attending the scene of a farm attack on the R555. The vehicle was spotted on the Stoffberg Road and followed.
Team work between authorities and local farmers, saw two farmers and a police officer succeeding in boxing in the car with their vehicles and forcing it off the road, just after a bend close to the Blinkwater filling station.
Four occupants were arrested on the scene. Two .9 mm handguns, both with bullets in the barrels, were discovered in the vehicle.
“It is simply by Grace that they did not try to shoot at us. We were prepared for that, but a stray bullet is always a danger,” said one of the farmers involved in stopping the car.
The four men arrested on the scene was scheduled to appear in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Their identities could not be made public at the time of going to press because the outcome of their court case was not known.
