Pakistani shops close due to protests
The protests in Extension 6, Mhluzi, have resulted in the closure of several Pakistani grocery shops in Avalon and its surrounds.
A Pakistani shop owner, who asked not to be named due to fear of reprisal, said that they received word about the protests on Monday night and made a collective decision to close several stores.
“We’ve been in this situation before and we understand that anything can happen. Although we really want to serve the community, we cannot risk being victims of any attacks,” he said.
There were reports on Tuesday and Wednesday of some shop windows broken and an attempt to loot a shop late on Wednesday afternoon. Police responded immediately and managed to calm the situation before any chaos erupted.
No one was injured during the incident.
Pakistani shops throughout the rest of Mhluzi remain open.
