The bail application of the coffin assault duo has started in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court.

The state is opposing bail for Willem Oosthuyzen and Theo Jackson stating that they might influence witnesses, and fear of their and other involved parties’ safety as reasons.

Prosecutor Rean Lourens said that Jackson has a previous conviction and thus have to prove why he should be released on bail.

The state will have to provide the court with reasons why Oosthuyzen should remain in custody.

Det. Const. Dimakatso Bahule took to the witness stand to provide details about the coffin assault.

She testified how Victor Mlotshwa was captured by two men driving Land Cruisers, tied with cable ties and taken to a remote location where he was assaulted with a knobkierrie and forced into a coffin which came from Jackson’s vehicle.

The court took a short adjournment and will proceed shortly.
