Long queues up to two kilometers on either side is being experienced at the Middelburg Toll Plaza following a power outage which affected all terminals early on Thursday morning during peak traffic.
Several motorists posted images of cars standing bumper to bumper at the toll gate, stating that waiting times were between 30 minutes and one hour.
Solange Soares Nicholson, spokesperson at TRAC, confirmed that a power failure occurred and as everything is linked to electricity, the problem is beyond their control.
“The toll plaza cannot process transactions electronically and a manual system is now being used, which unfortunately has caused some delays. We understand that the current back log is two kilometers on either side. We appeal to the public to please be patient as we are working on the problem and hope to rectify the situation as soon as possible”.
She added that the Middelburg Toll Plaza was the busiest on the N4 highway in South Africa and that they were doing everything to get it fully functioning once again.
