The taxi and police vehicle were both travelling in the direction of Middelburg.

The driver of the police vehicle, belonging to the Vosman precinct, claimed that the taxi suddenly switched lanes in front of him causing the vehicles to collide.

The taxi was flung into the oncoming lane with several passengers falling out of the vehicle in the process.

The accident happened between the Alzu Petroport and the Wonderfontein offramp just after 15:00 this afternoon.

Injured people were treated by ER24 and provincial ambulances and taken to hospitals in Belfast and Middelburg.

Four men and two women count among the deceased.
