An ambulance rammed into a hippopotamus in an accident which occurred just outside Pretoria last night, and has left two medics seriously injured.
A Life 24 ambulance was hit by the hippo on the R573, between Montana and Kwamahlanga, at about 21:30 last night.
According to an eyewitness, the hippo came out of the bush and ran straight towards the vehicle. The ambulance was on its way to another accident scene when the incident happened.
The driver, Mr Liver Maila, sustained broken legs and is critically injured while his passenger, Mr Jimmy Mmkola, sustained head and facial injuries. A third medic who was sitting in the back of the vehicle miraculously sustained no injuries.
The hippo, weighing three tonnes, died on impact. The ambulance, a Toyota Quantum, was completely ruined by the high impact accident.
