Who is?

While South African history may consist of a turbulent nature, it remains a very rich one, to say the least.

It may be a thing some would rather forget but it should still be respected, as George Santayana once said, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Not too long ago, the Middelburg Observer published an article about the world-renowned local artist, Gerard Sekoto. A fun fact is that Middelburg’s library was named in his honour.
The article left many asking the question “Who is this Gerard Sekoto?”, but the truth is, not only his name leaves a furrowed brow.

As it is with our National Heritage, Middelburg in itself has some fascinating characters and stories. On the one hand, we have African icons like Lilian Ngoyi and John Magagula and on the other, Carolus Trichardt and Gideon Scheepers. These historical characters must be remembered for something, but do you know what for?

With that in mind, www.mobserver.co.za has decided to start a new series called “Who is?”.

The series will comprise of two articles a week, one English and the other Afrikaans, with the objective of informing each other of our legends.
The “Who is/Wie is?” series will take a historic icon from their respective ethnic group and an informative article will be published on who that icon is.

So keep an eye out for the “Who is?” series on www.mobserver.co.za.
